Toll roads, strade a pedaggio "nascoste" e varie

Ciao, devo chiedervi una cosa: mi è venuto un dubbio riguardo al pagamento dei pedaggi nel Massachusetts e New England in generale. L'ultima volta che ci sono stato (6 anni fa), non ricordo di aver avuto problemi nel pagare i pedaggi in cash, ma da quello che leggo online sembra che nello stato del Massachusetts tutti i pedaggi siano elettronici e che quindi serva il transponder (EZ-PASS). Potete darmi dei consigli? Grazie!

Per la cronaca, noleggio l'auto al JFK, passo per Boston per poi raggiungere North Conway, poi scendo giù fino a Newport e ritorno al JFK.

If you are visiting Massachusetts and plan to drive, it is likely that you will have to pay tolls. As all the toll facilities in Massachusetts are All Electronic Tolling, you would not be able to pay tolls with cash there. One option would be to pay tolls later using Pay By Plate MA Invoice. But if you wish to avoid receiving invoice, you have three options:

 

1. E-ZPass MA: Though different states have their own E-ZPass, E-ZPass tag transponders purchased from any one state is accepted across following states. Therefore, if you already have a E-ZPass from any of these states, you are good to go.

But if do not have E-ZPass tag from other state, you would need to apply for E-ZPass MA. To get a regular E-ZPass transponder, USA registered vehicle license plate number is required. Here is the link to register for E-ZPass MA. Tourists, who rent a car, have just the option to use rental car's license plate if the rental agency allows. Therefore, you need to first check with your car rental agency if they release their rental car's license plate to renter's for getting E-ZPass. In simple words, you need to check if they will let you use the rental car's license plate for registering for E-ZPass. If yes, then you would need to register for E-ZPass MA in advance to your trip and get the tag transponder delivered to your address. Here is the link to register for E-ZPass.

 

2. On The Go (OTG) transponder: If you live in Massachusetts and need a transponder immediately or plan to travel to Massachusetts, or have rented a car, OTG transponder can be a good option. OTG transponder can be picked from the retailer locations in Massachusetts Only. To get transponder in person, you can either visit EZDriveMA Customer Service Centers or it's partner locations.The transponder is not registered to you until you either open an E-ZPass MA account or register the transponder to an existing E-ZPass MA account. Until OTG transponder is registered to an E-ZPass MA account, certain restrictions and limitations apply. Please note that following are important factors to consider before you plan to buy OTG Transponder:

• The transponder is for use only on two-axle, four tire vehicles with passenger plates – commercial vehicles are not allowed to use OTG transponders.
• The OTG transponder is only valid on Massachusetts toll roads. To use it in other states, you would need to register it to an E-ZPass MA account. if not registered to an account, use of the transponder in another state could result in you receiving violations.
• If for any reason the OTG transponder does not read correctly in Massachusetts toll lanes, a picture of your license plate will be captured and you will be mailed a Pay By Plate invoice.
• If you open a Private Individual E-ZPass MA account at one of their Partner locations you must: i) Wait 30 minutes to use your transponder in Massachusetts & ii) Wait 3 more business days before your transponder will be accepted out of state on E- ZPass toll roads.

3. PlatePass:PlatePass® is an electronic toll payment system that enables vehicle renters to use high-speed electronic toll collection lanes and bypass backups at cash lanes or pay tolls at booth where cash is not accepted. The PlatePass service enables you to avoid costly toll violation fines otherwise incurred if high-speed toll lanes are used without toll tag. Here are more details on using PlatePass® while traveling to northeast states. You will be charged the cash or pay-by-mail toll rate, whichever is higher, as published by the toll authority, plus a service fee per rental day to a weekly or monthly maximum. Therefore, though this is hassle-free option, it might turn out to be as costly or costlier than getting an E-ZPass® On-the-Go or opting for car rental agency's daily flat fee.

 

Nel 2011 a NY mi hanno dato un'auto con già il pass a bordo, mentre nel 2017 la Alamo in Florida aveva già il TollByPlate per tutte le sue vetture.

Appena tornati dal New England. Non tutte, ma in alcune tratte si può pagare SOLO in maniera elettronica. Noi non abbiamo preso l'EZ pass pensando di ovviare al problema con i metodi indicati da Panda nel precedente post. Problemino: sito in manutenzione e nessuna possibilità di creare l'account o pagare. Ovviamente distanti mila miglia dal centro assistenza EZ..... il numero che veniva indicato nei cartelli non prendeva mai la linea.....🤬.

Il sito si è sbloccato ma si può solo pagare il passaggio in anticipo per cui penso arriveranno svariate multe (anche perché il passaggio non è evitabile, nel senso che non c'è una segnaletica che indichi un esclusivo pagamento elettronico. O meglio c'è, ma in prossimità del casello, e non si hanno alternative 😏 ).

Io sto cercando di studiarmi per bene come fare per evitare multe e sbattimenti vari. Non voglio trovarmi nella tua situazione, ovvero arrivare in prossimità di un casello "cashless" e non avere alternative. Il mio itinerario prevede l'attraversamento dello stato di New York e tuttie 6 gli stati del New England.

Ho pianificato un itinerario consultando due siti molto utili, tollsmart.com e tollguru.com

Ho visto che nello stato di New York si può pagare il pedaggio delle strade e dei ponti a pagamento usando il sito tollsbymailny.com

 

Cercherò, in tutti i modi, di evitare di usare il transponder dell'auto per evitare inutili costi extra.

Si, il mio problema è nato quando il sito è andato in crash per qualche giorno. Il numero alternativo non sono riuscita a chiamarlo, era un numero che inizia per *. Con il senno di poi avrei preso l’ez. Ma non potevamo prevederlo 😓😓 

 

Lo stato di NY è quello con più caselli elettronici rispetto agli altri dei dintorni...... senza considerare Boston 😨

Io sono riuscita ad accedere anche dall'Italia, ma, nonostante la registrazione, mi è arrivato prima l'addebito dell'AVIS.

@Lizzina, credo che l'addebito AVIS ti sia arrivato perchè erano passate più di 48 ore dal passaggio al casello. Mi sembra di aver letto sulle FAQ del sito che il pagamento del pedaggio sul sito tollsbymailny va effettuato entro 48 ore altrimenti c'è appunto il rischio che sia già stato addebitato alla compagnia di noleggio. Tu avevi aspettato il ritorno in Italia per pagare?

No, ho provato a collegarmi subito dopo il passaggio sul ponte a pedaggio, ma il sistema non riusciva ad identificare la targa.

Quando poi sono rientrata in Italia, il sito ha finalmente trovato il mio "passaggio", ho fatto la registrazione per ricevere l'addebito sulla mia carta che mi avrebbero mandato entro 10 giorni.

Ma nel frattempo mi è arrivato l'addebito dell'AVIS.

Visto che sei appena rientrata dal New England, mi dici che giro hai fatto e in quanto tempo?

 

 

Intendo dire che la cifra di 20$ (per il noleggio dell'ez pass, come il nostro telepass) in confronto allo sbattimento di "pagare qui", "girare li", "li è elettronico", "li è cash", "li è ez"......... Non è niente! Noi abbiamo beccato (anche grazie 🤬 al navigatore) almeno 4/5 ponti a pagamento solo elettronico. Ora iniziano ad arrivare gli addebiti di Alamo sulla CC. Vai a capire cosa stanno addebitando 😫😫.....se sono multe o i semplici addebiti dei pedaggi... Anche se, viste le cifre propendo per multe.

 

Altra cosa, nel sito a me diceva che il pedaggio va pagato prima, o bisogna pagare al momento per telefono perché il Pay by mail in pratica registra la targa e invia una email istantanea all'indirizzo connesso alla stessa. Alrimenti..... "fine". 😰

 

 

Per quanto riguarda il giro era un loop su Boston del New England compreso Cascate del Niagara, Pennsylvania e tappa a NY in 16 giorni.. (fatto con molta calma). Se hai domande chiedi pure 😃

Per il ponte di ingresso a New York, per un altro in uscita, e qualche altro tratto di autostrada in cui si poteva pagare solo by email o con ezpass
