http://www.discoveramerica.com/usa/travel-information/transportation-within-the-us.aspx

Foreign visitors can legally drive a car in the USA for up to 12 months using their home driver’s licence. However, an IDP will have more credibility with U.S. traffic police, especially if your home licence doesn’t have a photo or isn’t in English. Your automobile association at home can issue an IDP, valid for one year, for a small fee. Always carry your home licence together with the IDP.

If an international driving license or permit is used alone, it must be issued by a country other than the United States. Vehicle rental companies may have additional requirements.

A foreign driver license allows you to drive in NYS. 1. There is no “international driver license.” Tennessee does recognize driver licenses issued by other countries. [...]

The International Driver Permit is not required under any Tennessee statute. Since the International Driver Permit is an internationally standardized translation and verification of license validity, it can be used by law enforcement as an aid to determine a person’s identity and the validity of their foreign-issued license. However, an International Driver Permit is neither required to drive legally in this State nor serves as a valid substitute for a license issued by this State or any other state or country.

An individual can legally drive with a valid, unexpired driver license from another state or country for up to 90 days after moving to Texas.

UTAH

Risponde il Department of Public Safety - Utah Highway Patrol

Utah State Code 53-3-202 outlines the licensing requirements for operating a motor vehicle in Utah. It states:

53-3-202

(1) A person may not drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state unless the person is:

[...]

(d) a nonresident who is at least 16 years of age and younger than 18 years of age who has in the nonresident's immediate possession a valid license certificate issued to the nonresident in the nonresident's home state or country and is driving in the class or classes identified on the home state license certificate, except those persons referred to in Part 6, Drivers' License Compact, of this chapter;

(e) a nonresident who is at least 18 years of age and who has in the nonresident's immediate possession a valid license certificate issued to the nonresident in the nonresident's home state or country if driving in the class or classes identified on the home state license certificate, except those persons referred to in Part 6, Drivers' License Compact, of this chapter;

[...]

An international drivers license will not allow you to drive in Utah unless it is accompanied by a valid driver license from your country of residence. Without this, the international driver license has no bearing. According to the statute above, an international driver license is not required, only a valid license from your state or country of origin. Please review the above code and verify that you are in compliance with the other requirements, including age and endorsements.

VERMONT

Risponde il Law Enforcement Liaison

An individual from Italy, who is visiting the United States as a bona fide tourist, can legally drive using their domestic driver’s license for a period not to exceed 1 year from date of arrival. Should this tourist accept a job or attend school, they would lose tourist status and be required to obtain a state driver license. Individuals are “advised” to carry an International Driving Permit (basically this is an English translation of their driver license).

VIRGINIA

http://www.dmv.state.va.us/general/outsideva/international.html

An international driver's license or permit is a foreign translation of your existing DMV driver's license for use when you are traveling outside the United States. It is invalid alone, but can be helpful when accompanied by a valid driver's license.

These licenses are issued by your local AAA but are not issued to persons whose driving privilege is suspended or revoked. Beware of offers from entities selling an international driver's license that cannot be suspended or revoked. These licenses are NOT VALID and are not authorized by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Visitors or military personnel holding an international license issued by a foreign country may operate a vehicle in this country, but only if the international license is accompanied by a valid driver's license issued by the person's home country.

WASHINGTON

http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/moving.html

If you’re visiting Washington State, you may use your out-of-country driver license for up to 1 year.

WEST VIRGINIA

Risponde il Division of Motor Vehicles

You will need to possess the Italian driver’s license along with an International driver’s license. The International license will serve as an interpretation of the Italian driver’s license for law enforcement officials. You must carry both licenses when operating a vehicle on the highways. The International license is valid in the state of WV for ninety (90) calendar days.

WISCONSIN

http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/drivers/apply/foreign.htm

In addition to having a valid foreign driver's license, visitors are advised to carry an International Driving Permit obtained in their home country, as authorized by the 1943/1949 or 1968 conventions, or attach an English translation to their national driving license. The International Driving Permit is translated into the nine official languages of the United Nations, including English, and serves as a translation to be used in conjunction with the visitor's valid driver's license. It can be useful in emergencies, such as traffic violations or auto accidents, particularly when a foreign language is involved.

WYOMING

http://www.dot.state.wy.us/home/driver_license_records.html

Drivers with licenses issued from another country may drive in Wyoming as long as they have a valid driver license from their country. An International Driving Permit is recommended but not mandatory. This permit translates your driver license, so if needed, the proper authorities will be able to ascertain the information on your driver license.

"A valid driver's license from the customer's country of residence is required and must be presented at time of rental. The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period.

If the driver's license is in a language other than English, an International Driver's Permit is required along with the driver's license.

Exceptions:

Japanese travelers may use the Japanese Driver's License Translation Service, which replaces the need for an International Driver's Permit.

At California, Nevada and Phoenix-area airports and rental locations, renters with driver's licenses issued outside of the United States or its territories must produce a valid Passport. US Territories include American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Midway Islands."

A valid driver's license from the customer's country of residence is required and must be presented at time of rental. The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period.

If the driver's license is in a language other than English, an International Driver's Permit is required along with the driver's license.

: zip :
