anche io ho preso on line il permesso per il south coyote, non era andata a buon fine la lotteria per the wave e ho provato con il south, c'era posto e l'ho preso!

Noi abbiamo lasciato la macchina presso la outpost paria e siamo saliti sulla loro, così al ritorno l'abbiamo ripresa e siamo tornati a kanab e ci siamo portati dietro durante l'escursione il permesso da attaccare allo zaino e quello da esporre sulla loro macchina!

Grazie giaco e valentina, il viaggio non è per niente sicuro, tuttavia nel caso farò come voi e mi affiderò all'outpost paria.

In questi giorni ho una fissa... Cathedral Valley. Leggevo che non è necessario avere un 4x4 per percorrere i 95km del loop, ma almeno un veicolo high clearance. Nello specifico com'è possibile avere la certezza di ottenere un veicolo del genere dopo aver prenotato semplicemente la classe? 2 anni fa ci è capitato un Ford Escape, decisamente high clearance (credo)... mentre lo scorso anno, della stessa categoria ci avevano proposto un'altra autovettura, molto più bassa (e con bagagliaio più piccolo, tanto che l'abbiamo scartata).

In realtà... essendo un loop, probabilmente è possible evitare la seconda parte e ritornare indietro, non penso ci sia un verso di marcia... o si? Curiosità... qual era la parte incriminata? Inoltre sarebbe meglio partire da River Ford o Caineville?

A dirti la verità la parte che mi interessa maggiormente è Temple of the Sun e Temple of the Moon. Ma quella zona è più vicina a Caineville, quindi non volendo fare il loop dovrei fare molti più km per tornare indietro a River Ford

Si beh... 95km di sterrato non sono affatto da sottovalutare, anche se guardando diversi filmati il fondo mi sembra molto scorrevole. Per il pernotto nel campground, l'idea non sarebbe malvagia, ma se dovessi passare il tramonto comunque mi piacerebbe farlo al temple of the sun che è abbastanza distante dal campground (e girare al buio da quelle parti non mi sembra il caso). Vabbè... intanto vedremo se si farà qualcosa quest'estate e se riusciremo a prendere un 4x4.

Per chi come me fosse interessato alla visita di Cathedral Valley, ecco due recensioni

There's a lot of myth about Cathedral Road. If you ask the rangers about the road, they will suck their cheeks in and issue dire warnings about mud and advise against attempting it without a 4x4. We drove this road in an AWD crossover with reasonable ground clearance, and had no real problems, so here's some practical info about the road. One important point is that the road is mud, so is to be avoided during or after rain, whatever you're driving.

The visitor center sells a guide to the route for $2. It's worth the outlay because the roadside numbered stops are hard to see (in fact 2 of them seemed to be completely missing).

Firstly, we did not ford the river on Hartnet Road - my husband waded out to test the depth and turned back when it was approaching his knees - so we had to do the loop the other way around and return the same way which made it more than 100 miles - allow a full day for this trip. Around 95% of the road is similar to Notom-Bullfrog/Burr trail, ie graded hard packed mud with some loose gravel and short sections of soft sand. You can easily do this without 4WD. However, and this is the really important point for anyone considering this road (especially in a rental), you DO need good ground clearance because the other 5% is very rocky and uncomfortable, and there are numerous deep dips through washes. There is no way you can get around this road in a normal passenger car without doing some damage. We grounded the front spoiler of our crossover (luckily in soft sand) coming out of one dip, and a little further on someone had abandoned a mangled spoiler by the side of the road.

These issues aside, this is NOT a technically difficult drive provided you have the clearance and a passenger who's prepared to get out in a couple of places and guide you through the deep dips.

So is it worth it? Absolutely, no question. Capitol Reef is not worth visiting unless you are prepared to get off the tarmac and drive the dirt roads. I have never seen anything like the landscape in Cathedral Valley and the South Desert, and I'm really glad we did the drive.

We were so glad the weather held off and we were able to visit this quiet, peaceful, secluded corner of Capitol Reef. This is a 60 mile dirt road that you don't want to be on when it rains. So even though we did get rained on briefly it wasn't enough to keep us away.

And thank goodness because this place was worth every effort it made to get there. The road wasn't too bad, I think our Forester could have done it, but I was glad we had our heavy duty truck because it is just such a long tough road. They say you need high clearance and they recommended the 4x4 to cross the river. There are only a few places that a high clearance was really helpful but I don't think it was absolutely necessary, you'd just have to be more careful. And I'm not convinced the 4x4 was needed to get across the ford, but who am I. One thing I was convinced on though was you don't want to be out there trying to do this when the road is wet. You'd never get through that bentonite clay.

Then the next section of road was the roughest and most difficult and where the high clearance would be helpful. Crossing a rough rocky bed down to the Caineville wash, except for this section the road could be driven by cars.

We were told to take about 8 hours for the loop and that is about what we took. 4 hours to our campsite and 4 hours back out again.

This is the second time that we went to Capitol Reef NP. We stayed at Torrey in the Wonderland Inn Hotel. If you are not an experienced 4x4 driver, you should not do Cathedral Valley on your own. We booked a full day trip at Backcountry outfitters in Torrey (http://www.ridethereef.com) Do not expect this to be a jeep tour because the roads are too rough for this. It was with a high clearance 4x4 pickup. It was a great experience. We were only with the two of us and the guide Kacey. We left Torrey at 9am and returned at 4pm. A picnic was included. Kacey stopped whenever we asked her so we could make wonderful pictures of Cathedral Valley. It is a 'must do' if you like national park experiences.

forse a suo tempo le avevo lette anch'io queste recensioni, comunque tolto cosa dicono i ranger, parlavo con uno del posto, e mi aveva confermato che in alcuni punti della seconda parte la strada era veramente rocciosa e difficile e in alcuni punti anche con un pò di sabbia

il tutto dipende anche molto dal livello del fiume, ho visto dei video e a volte l'acqua è altina, se si bagna la calotta sono cxxxi

non avrebbe senso secondo me, non fare il loop

Questo l'itinerario più o meno definitivo con le relative attività. Per alcune inciderà il fatto di avere o meno un 4x4. Ho letto che la Dollar a Las Vegas noleggia qualche Wrangler... magari è una macchina un po' scomoda per fare un lungo viaggio, ma sicuramente con quella non avrei problemi ad affrontare la Cathedral Valley (meteo permettendo). Tra l'altro conto anche di avere un po' di fortuna con i vari permessi per The Wave, the Subway e South Coyote Butte.... vedremo...
